Asfendou Gorge in Sfakia, Chania Crete is a must-visit destination for hiking enthusiasts. This picturesque gorge is situated in the province of Sfakia and starts from the deserted hamlet of Asfendou, which is currently home to local sheep herders. The trail runs parallel to the streambed and is passable but steep. As you hike, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the Libyan sea in many places. Though the vegetation here is not as dense as in other canyons in the province, you'll encounter the Cave of the Shepherd and the Wall-Painted Cavernous Church of St. Anthony, which is situated just before reaching the deserted village of Kolokasia. This village is a fine example of authentic traditional Cretan architecture, with arches dividing the houses into four parts. Don't forget to visit the two surviving chapels of St. George and Virgin Mary while you're there!
