Kalymnos Churches - Panagia Kyra Psili Monastery in Kalymnos, Greece is a hidden gem located in a mountain cave north of Vathys. According to legend, the monastery was built by a Kalymnian who had initially rejected the Christian religion but rediscovered his faith upon returning to the island. Another story tells of a shepherd who stumbled upon an icon of the Virgin Mary in the cave while searching for a lost goat. Despite his attempts to take the icon to his village, it mysteriously returned to the cave.
The locals transformed the cave into a church, transferring the icon of the Virgin Mary to Vathys of Kalymnos. On August 15th of every year, the icon is returned to the church for an overnight celebration. Additionally, a traditional Assumption Day feast is held in the church, providing a unique opportunity to experience the rich cultural heritage of Panagia Kyra Psili Monastery in Kalymnos, Greece.
