Rethymnon Churches & Monasteries - Moni Preveli is a sacred monastery that can be found in the south of the Rethymnon Prefecture, Crete. It stands as the most revered part of the Holy Diocese of Lambis and Sfakion, which holds spiritual jurisdiction over the area. The monastery has two main building complexes: the Kato Monastery of Saint John the Baptist and the Pisso Monastery of Saint John the Theologian. Currently, only the Pisso Monastery is in operation. The Preveli Monastery and its dependencies cover a large estate of land in the Phoenix Municipality, stretching towards the Libyan Sea and along the Great River. The monks of Preveli Monastery played an active and leading role in national activities for the freedom and education of the people, resulting in a rich history. Moni Preveli is recognized and respected throughout the island of Crete.
