Moni Agias Irinis in Rethymnon, Crete
Rethymnon Churches & Monasteries - Nestled at an elevation of 630m in the south of Krousonas village, at the base of Psiloritis, lies Moni Agias Irinis. This monastery was among the wealthiest in early Ottoman times and has been mentioned in documents dating back to the 16th century. Once belonging to the Mudazzo family, this Venetian monastery also served as a school in the Rethymnon area. Unfortunately, in 1822, the monastery was destroyed, and its inhabitants were killed. The property was later given to the Monastery of Kera. However, in 1940, reconstruction commenced, and the monks returned in 1944. Moni Agias Irinis is now a nunnery dedicated to the memory of Agia Irini. A visit to this historical monument is a must for any visitor to Crete.
