Agios Georgios Selinari in Lasithi, Crete
Lasithi Churches & Monasteries - The Monastery of St. George in the Selinari Gorge is a popular destination for travelers to Crete. Built during the second Byzantine period, the monastery features a courtyard with three temples, including St. George, Epiphany, and Easter. Legend has it that a monk from Rhodes saw an image of St. George and built a chapel in his honor. He spent the rest of his life in a carved rock atop Anavlochou, where a large cross still stands. Today, the miraculous image of St. George is said to have protected the monks during the Turkish occupation. As the patron saint of travelers, a visit to the male monastery of Agios Georgios Selinari is a traditional pilgrimage for those passing through Crete.
