Kalamata Churches & Monasteries - Located just 7 km from Kalamata, the historic Zoodohou Pigis Velanidias Monastery in Kalamata, Peloponnese has a rich 300-year-old history. Founded in 1697, the monastery was once home to a tower that was unfortunately destroyed over a century ago. Despite setbacks, the monastery played a significant role during the war of independence, although it was destroyed twice - once by Ibrahim Pasha in 1825 and again during the German occupation. Today, the Zoodohou Pigis Velanidias Monastery stands as one of the most important and iconic monasteries in the Peloponnese, and reconstruction efforts began in 1992.
