Heraklion Churches & Monasteries - Discover the rich history of Agios Minas Church in Heraklion, Crete, dedicated to the patron saint of the city, Saint Minas. Every November 11, a public holiday is celebrated in honor of the saint. A short stroll along Vikela Street and Agiou Mina Street, lasting 5 to 10 minutes, will lead you to the cathedral. The church is located on a large paved square, with the Archiepiscopate of Crete to the right and the original little church of Saint Minas to the left. Locally known as "mikros Agios Minas," the original church was built in 1735 and served as the Metropolis of Crete for the first time after the Turkish occupation.
