Its name comes from the Greek term for "life-giving source". The Byzantine emperor Alexis Comnenos I granted the entire island to Parthenios to construct the monastery. Interestingly, the monk was known as Latrinos due to his previous establishment of a monastery on Mount Latros, near Millet.
