Built in 1480, its primary function was to protect the island from enemy attacks and invaders. The castle was once part of the medieval town of Zakynthos, which included numerous houses and twelve churches. Unfortunately, after many earthquakes and wars, nothing remains of the town. In 1970, the walls were consolidated to prevent them from falling down after numerous earthquakes. Thanks to diggings in 1984, many churches dating back to the 11th and 18th centuries, along with other ruins from the Byzantine period and English occupation, were uncovered.
