Ancient Lissos in Chania, Crete
Chania Sights & Monuments - Discover Ancient Lissos in Chania, Crete, a city whose ruins are nestled between Paleochora and Sougia on the stunning southern coast of Chania. Originally Port Doric City Elyros, Lissos and its neighboring ports thrived during the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods until they were destroyed by the Saracen Arabs. One of Lissos' most notable features is the Asklipio, where the thermal waters were a source of healing for patients. During excavations, statues of Asklepios, the goddess Hygeia, and Pluto were discovered and are now showcased in the Archaeological Museum of Chania. With 20 statues found by chance in 1957, Lissos has one of the highest concentrations of statues in Crete, second only to Gortys, the Roman capital of Crete.
