Halkidiki Sights - The Sanctuary of Ammon Zeus in Halkidiki, Greece is a significant temple that holds immense historical and archaeological value. Founded in the second half of the 8th century BC by Euboean settlers of Afytis, it was initially established as a sanctuary of Dionysus. It was a place of worship for both Dionysus and the Nymphs, located in a cave under the rock on the southwest side of the site. Later, towards the end of the 5th century BC, a shrine of Egyptian origin dedicated to the god Ammon Zeus was built in the northern part of the area. The shrine was further expanded in the 4th century BC with the construction of a pavilion temple in Doric style, which had a roof adorned with clay tiles, reliefs, and colors. The Sanctuary of Ammon Zeus in Halkidiki, Greece, is a fascinating archaeological site that offers an insight into the rich history of the region.
