Athens Museums - The National Observatory in Thissio, Athens is an iconic institution situated on the hill of Nymphs that boasts a breathtaking view of the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora. Established in 1842 by the national benefactor Georgios Sinas, a former Greek ambassador in Vienna, the observatory was designed by the renowned Danish architect Theophil Hansen and completed in 1846. Its primary mission was to enhance academic research in the newly-established Greek state. It was headed by the acclaimed Greek-Austrian astronomer Georg Bouris.

Today, the National Observatory in Thissio, Athens encompasses several institutes, including the Institute of Astronomy and the Institutes of Environmental Research and Geodynamics. Its Weather Station is responsible for publishing weather forecasts for Greece. The public is welcome to explore the premises and participate in evening sky observation sessions.
