Rethymnon Sights & Monuments - Zominthos in Psiloritis, Rethymnon Crete is a notable archaeology site that once served as a thriving Minoan settlement from 1900-1400 BC. Yannis Sakellarakis, an esteemed archaeologist, has spent the last 5 years excavating the area, with plans to continue uncovering vital artifacts that will significantly expand our understanding of Minoan civilization. Located within the Mt. Ida range, on Mt. Psiloritis at an altitude of 1187m above sea level, it dominates the Zominthos Plateau, just 7.5km west of Anogia on the way to the Nida Plateau. Throughout Minoan times, the revered route that connected the Palace of Knossos to the sacred Ideon Cave traversed through Zominthos, making it an integral part of history.
